Research blog: Commercial Conventions
I will be doing a Vaseline commercial. In commercials about Vaseline, you usually see people applying the Vaseline to various parts of their body or describing their experience with using Vaseline.
- The characters have either very smooth or very rough skin.
- The setting is usually plain and simple.
- The appearance of the characters are never the same, they vary from different sizes to different skin tones.
- There is always little to no props.
- The theme of the commercials are usually related to skin and beauty.
Vaseline products vary from body lotion to petroleum jelly. Due to Vaseline being characterized as a beauty product, the commercials sometimes use pathos as a promoting style. In some commercials, they have people speak about their experience with Vaseline and they typically speaks about how it boosted their confidence when it came to certain things.
At the end of almost every commercial, they show the Vaseline product by its self. A the product is being showed, there is a voiceover describing the benefits of Vaseline. When showcasing the product, the logo is always showing. Vaseline has a pretty simple logo, it consists of the word "Vaseline" inside of an oval shape with straight sides. The background of the logo is typically blue but can also be colors such as brown or pink.
In Vaseline commercials, you would typically see one person using the product while another off camera speaks about the product. Although the commercials usually consist of a voice over from someone off camera, their is times where the person using the product is also speaking. There are also some commercials where short skits are put together. In the commercials, it can vary from 1 to 10 characters.
